Much of Michelle’s recent work employs subconscious or automatic drawing within the images, which combines with more rational and systematic elements. When using the processes and machinery of printmaking, she feels there must be rational and organised episodes in the stage by stage development of the print, and moments of intuitive action are critical in achieving the unexpected, surprising and sometimes disconcerting content which is important to the meaning of the works. The symbols and visual codes which emerge in the process of making the prints can be seen as metaphors for facets of human experience.
