Established in 2010, New Light celebrates and promotes Northern art, supporting both well-known and emerging artists by offering some of the region’s best awards and opportunities with the biennial New Light Prize Exhibition.

The New Light Prize Exhibition 2023/24 will be touring to four Northern galleries as well as one week in London at Bankside Gallery.

New Light was founded in response to the dearth of exhibition opportunities for artists in the region, especially artists using traditional media. This year's exhibition attracted entries of an extremely high standard from across the region, creating a mammoth task for the judges to short-list the artists and their works. New Light have welcomed the Cheshire artistic community to their eligible region this year, and they are delighted that the county is well represented in the short-listed artworks.

The common thread through all that New Light does is a deep belief that the visual arts of the North of England deserve to be both celebrated and supported. The current cost-of-living crisis poses additional pressures on many individuals and sectors, with the Visual Arts sector feeling the impact more than some others. This throws the work that organisations such as New Light do into sharp relief, and they are delighted to be able to present such a strong exhibition of work from some of the best contemporary northern artists.

The biennial New Light Prize Exhibition is now established as offering the region’s best awards and opportunities, and is often described as the “Summer Exhibition of the North”.

"All we do is possible through the generosity of our patron, Valeria Sykes, who has supported the charity from its inception, our loyal sponsors and - most importantly - the artists. Our sincere thanks go to them all." - Penny Hartley, New Light
