Lisa Traxler RWS
Lisa Traxler is a contemporary British artist based in West Sussex whose multidisciplinary practice investigates the dialogue between painting and sculpture. Her work explores how structure, geometry, and colour operate within spatial environments, evolving into what she terms “space paintings” — works that transcend the traditional picture plane to inhabit and transform their surroundings.
Originally trained in fashion and design, Traxler’s early career as a fashion editor and costume designer informs her acute attention to detail through colour and composition. Her constructed collage paintings, frequently exhibited through the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS), exemplify her rigorous approach. Each begins with hand-painted papers that are cut, layered, and assembled into relief compositions which hover between two and three dimensions, creating optical and spatial complexity. Her ongoing research into 1920s dazzle camouflage and the principles of geometric abstraction continues to underpin both the conceptual and formal aspects of her practice.
Traxler has exhibited widely across the United Kingdom and Europe, with notable solo exhibitions including Outer Space (Pangolin London), Time Traveller (Southampton City Art Gallery), Dazzle and Disrupt (West Gallery, Quay Arts, IW), Blast Wall (The Foundry Gallery, London), and Letters Home (Portsmouth Cathedral).
She is an elected member of the Royal Watercolour Society, the Royal Society of Sculptors, and The London Group. Her work is represented in significant public and private collections and has received multiple Arts Council England Awards.
