Miao Tan ARWS

Miao Tan holds a BA in Painting from Minzu University of China and an MA in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art. Her practice spans drawing, collage, and material-based explorations using natural lacquer. In 2023, she received the New Graduate Award from the Royal Watercolour Society, and her works have been widely exhibited in London galleries such as Mall Galleries, Standpoint Gallery and Bankside Gallery.

Miao's mixed-media drawing practice centres on intuition, bodily engagement and openness to accident. She treats materials as living substances that instinctively respond to the body's strength and rhythm. For her, drawing is a sensory practice, a tactile form of thinking and a processual way of perceiving the world. Rather than aiming for control or predetermined outcomes, her works emerge in the moment like breath, like music, like the ebb and flow of tides, free, fluid and alive.
