Quentin Blake, Conversations with Birds #12', 2019, pen, ink & watercolour
Quentin Blake's annual show at Bankside Gallery will bring a host of new work, all of which has been created since 2019. The 'Good Companions' of the title appear as portraits of inter-linked imaginary people, worked in coloured gel pen with wash, bringing sociability to the singular heads which have been a feature of his work over the past several years. Companionship will be explored in many different forms in the exhibition, particularly the relationships between people and animals or birds: of which some are very clearly rooted in the natural landscape, while others invite the viewer to supply the context.
