Guidelines for RWS & RE Members for Presentation of Unframed Browser Work

Unframed work for display in the Bankside Gallery browsers need to look as smart and professional as possible. Increasingly, a large proportion of Bankside Gallery sales are of unframed work so the browsers are an important aspect of your membership and exposure at the gallery.

All RWS and RE members are invited to replace and restock as per the following guidelines. We attach a security tag to each browser work to try and deter and prevent theft, however, please note that browser works are not covered by our insurance.

The number of pieces: All members may have 5 pieces of unframed work at the gallery. We will display as many as possible according to available space during any given exhibition.

The size of pieces:

Bankside Gallery cannot accommodate works larger than 90 cm in any direction as any larger is unwieldy in the browsers. Works must be at least 24 cm in any direction as any smaller is too tempting to thieves.

The backing board:

The pressure on space in the browsers is created as much by the thickness of the acetated pieces as by their number.

All artists are asked to use a single piece of white thick mountboard as a backing board

We suggest 1250-micron thick mountboard such as Everest (John Purcell code number EVOF6 is the largest size). These are acid free, economical and absolutely thick enough to protect the work.

Artists who use window mounts or heavier/thicker boards may have their numbers in the browser reduced to 2 or even 1 depending on thickness.

Please use white backing boards, do not use other colours, or any foamboard or corrugated plastic for example.

Presentation:

  • The size and format of the backing board should be appropriate to the work.
  • The acetate / plastic wrapping should also be wrapped taut around the work
  • Please do not use pre-made bags unless they are customised.
  • All edges must be securely sealed, otherwise browser works quickly become scruffy and damaged after handling by customers.
  • An artist CV on the back of each piece is recommended but not compulsory. Customers really like to read about the artist so this may well help your work sell!

Artists are requested to use the Society CV templates and limit to one side of A4 only.

  • Please use RWS/RE branded adhesive labels on the back of the work only.

Society branded adhesive labelsfor the reverse will be posted to you and are available on request at the gallery at any time.

  • No personal address / website or other contact information on the back please
