Paul Newland RWS

Paul’s subject matter comes down to still life and to cityscape / landscape. The still lifes are sometimes rather small studies of a few objects, sometimes views taking in a long interior space. These interiors are usually done from drawings, studies, memory, photographs – whatever datahe gathers. The smaller still-lifes are always painted directly from the objects in front of him. The cityscapes are either views of developments along the Thames, or the closest thing he can get to a vista from some high point in South London. One of his favourite quotations is from Bonnard who said “Look at the motif once, or a thousand times."
